Malaga capital
A city of delights

Image1The delights of Spain´s fifth largest city are only 20 minutes away. Being in the middle of one of the world’s most important tourist destinations, the city of Málaga has a special charm which makes it a must on any visitor’s itinerary. Culture, tradition, gastronomy, shopping centres, an enviable climate and the relaxed, hospitable nature of its people serve to consolidate the image of “Paradise City”, the name used by Spanish poet and Nobel literature prize winner Vicente Aleixandre in reference to the city.

Image2This modern bustling city has developed rapidly in the last twenty years or so but has, nevertheless, managed to preserve its essential character. Undeniably cosmopolitan, the city of Málaga has maintained its inherent Spanishness in spite of the enormous influence of foreign tourism on the province which has had a notable effect on coastal towns. The old and the new definitely meet on Marques de Larios, Plaza de la Constitución and Calle de Granada, which form the backbone of the shopping area and the thriving nightlife. The narrow side streets form a maze of alleys crammed with tapas bars and bodegas - old fashioned wine shops brimming with casks including the local sweet wine which is similar to Port.

Image3One of the major artistic forces of the Twentieth Century was born in Málaga in 1881. At his birthplace on the Plaza de la Merced can now be found the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Foundation, which is dedicated to the life and works of this prolific artist. The Foundation is open to the public daily and is free of charge.

• A major landmark in the area is the impressive walled fortress La Alcazaba. Built by the Moors in the 11th Century on the site of a Roman Fortress, dating back to 700 AD, Alcazaba is positioned on the Gibralfaro Hill offering magnificent views across the city and harbour.

• The ruins of a 2nd Century roman amphitheatre are found below the entrance to Alcazaba and are currently under construction.

• Above Alcazaba is Gibralfaro Castle which was completed in the 15th Century by the Muslim King Yusuf.

• Dating from 1528 the city’s cathedral was built on the site of the mosque, which remained after the expulsion of the Moors from Spain.

• Inside can be found the Cathedral Museum containing a rich display of sculpture and paintings. Located next to the cathedral on Plaza del Obispo is the Diocesal Museum that houses a substantial collection of religious artefacts.
Let our entertainment team show you around the Picasso museum, the Cathedral, the Theatre and the shopping areas of Calle Larios and have them reserve your table in one of the 30 fishing restaurants in El Palo, a small typical village within the big capital, where time stands still.
